Convergent Energy + Power and Temporal Power Announce Flywheel Storage Project for Ontario Grid Operator

Posted April 12, 2016 in News, Press Releases

IESO’s second Temporal flywheel project demonstrates Ontario’s commitment to grid modernization.

Mississauga, Ontario, April 11, 2016 – Convergent Energy + Power and Temporal Power today announced the signing of an agreement for the installation of a 5 MW flywheel energy storage system in Ontario. Convergent was selected by the IESO through a competitive RFP process completed in 2014.

“Convergent is excited to be working with Temporal Power and the IESO on this important project to help the province of Ontario advance their progressive energy objectives,” said Frank Genova, COO of Convergent Energy + Power. “Temporal worked with us to design a fully integrated energy storage solution that will provide significant value to the local transmission system. Convergent works on projects across North America and has found Ontario to be one of the most forward thinking and welcoming markets for energy storage asset development.”

The Province of Ontario is a world leader in modernizing its electrical grid including initiatives that have retired all coal generation, adopted aggressive renewable energy standards and fostered the deployment of energy storage throughout its grid. This will be the second Temporal flywheel system to be installed in the IESO’s system, which reflects both the success of the first project and the continued commitment of the Province to creating value for electricity consumers using energy storage.

Eric Murray, Temporal Power’s CEO adds, “Temporal Power is pleased to be working with Convergent Energy + Power to deliver frequency response services to the IESO in Ontario. This is Temporal Power’s second flywheel facility in Ontario, and we are proud to have the IESO’s continued support. Temporal Power’s technology delivers superior performance and longevity relative to other short-duration storage options and we are pleased to be deploying our technology at home and abroad from our manufacturing facility in Mississauga.”
